My aim for this exhibition was to portray a different view of our historic buildings, in a different light; reborn for the modern viewer to appreciate the craftsmanship and architectural details of these buildings.
The inspiration for Look Up on High began from visiting the British Isles last year where the villages were transformed to exciting, happy places visited by many tourists and bringing economic benefits to the towns.
I have used a combination of applications. Oil paint using palette knife and brush for these works with a strong colour palette to give the facades character, individuality and soul. I found that the different areas of the facades became more of a tapestry of colour and tone, which created for themselves their own persona.
Painting these facades is like painting a portrait, where in the process, you get to know the face intimately. I found this to be very uplifting, fulfilling and an educational experience. By doing this, it has made me appreciate the local architecture even more. Knowledge of our architecture is essential for a connection with it and gives us the will to preserve them for the future.
